Unlike the boring and processional Le Mans 24 from two weeks ago, IMSA’s 6 Hours of The Glen race was a fight for the lead in all three classes for the full run time of the race. In what turned out to be an incredibly hot New York day with track temperatures reaching well into the triple digits, this was a taxing day…
Watkins Glen still rules after all these years, and this weekend, the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship ran its phenomenal 6 Hours of the Glen there. There’s nothing like bombarding the peaceful hills of upstate New York with the roar of multi-class sportscar racing.
Happy Independence Day! Here’s all the America you could possibly want, in all the patriotic liveries that showed up to race during the 6 Hours of the Glen weekend at Watkins Glen. We’ll be back to our regular programming tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the holiday and be careful with those fireworks.
I often get stuck in the trap of “I am here for a race weekend!” and don’t get to see much beyond the track itself and where I’m staying. I might make it to the local Denny’s at 1 a.m., but that’s about it. Do not fall into that trap with Watkins Glen. You will regret it and kick yourself until you can go back.
I don’t think the Florida tourism folks could have paid for a more perfect ad than the one they got today. Everyone toughing it out at the 6 Hours of the Glen in New York is freezing their nuts off in the unseasonably cold rain, and Richard Westbrook just drove their Florida-branded car to a win here today.
Let’s just say that Daytona Prototype drivers Ricky Taylor and Joey Hand are not having a good day at the 6 Hours of The Glen. Taylor spun, then Hand spun, then Hand’s car tapped Taylor into the pit lane. It’s like poetry in wipeouts.
Standing water forced United SportsCar to red-flag today’s 6 Hours of The Glen for a brief period. In the meantime, drivers were huddling in their cars on pit lane, trying to stay warm.
For various reasons—wet conditions, cool temperatures, and aerodynamics—many teams on the grid opted to cover up scoops and vents for the start of the race. Here’s a few examples of tape being used as a vital body part at the 6 Hours of the Glen.
[Today is much better than yesterday. Look at those big meaty slicks on the grid! The track is moist and there’s a little mist in the air at Watkins Glen, but there’s not a lot of standing water on the track and the chance of rain dries up as the day goes on.]
Mazda originally planned to test out its gas engine in the number 70 car this weekend, but we never really saw that car. It hasn’t been out setting times or doing much of anything. Simply put, it’s not ready for primetime yet, so they’re sticking to the number 07 diesel for now.
I’m off to one of the most historic race tracks in America for the third round of the North American Endurance Cup: the 6 Hours of the Glen. Watkins Glen is one of the toughest, most unforgiving circuits on the United SportsCar schedule, and we’ll see who wins—and who eats the pastel blue wall.
